「絵本、お話の読み聞かせ、想像力を生かす学び」

このプレゼンテーションでは、教材執筆者であり教師でもあるパトリシア・デーリー・大江が、幼児から小学校低学年の子どもの学習において、絵本とお話の読み聞かせがいかに大切であるかについてお話します。クラスの人数や言語習得レベルに応じた絵本やお話の読み聞かせの活用例を紹介します。具体的には、語彙力をつけるためのお話、絵本を使った創作活動、リズムと韻、オリジナルの絵本作り、英語で語る日本のおとぎ話、ハロウィーン・クリスマス・学校行事で使えるお話などを取り上げます。パトリシア自身が作成した教材やインターアクティブな活動を使い、他の著者によって書かれた本からの例も引用しながら、セッションを進めていきます。

Picture Books, Storytelling and Imaginative Learning

In this presentation author and teacher, Patricia Daly Oe, will discuss the value of using picture books and storytelling in the learning environment for children from the pre-school to early elementary age groups. Following on from this, she will show practical examples of how to use picture books and storytelling techniques in small and large classes and for a range of linguistic levels. Themes covered will include: using stories for vocabulary development, creative activities inspired by picture books, rhythm and rhyme, making your own picture stories (students and teachers), famous Japanese stories in English and using stories for special events such as Halloween, Christmas or school performances. Patricia will use many examples of books by a number of different authors as well as her own materials and interactive activities to illustrate her talk. The presentation will be in English only.

Creativity with Rhythm in the EFL Classroom

The natural intonation and stresses of English words follow a very rhythmical sound. As teachers we want our students to have natural English pronunciation and long retention. We can do this through rhythm and chants. In this workshop the presenter will share chants that she has created from her experience from playing Japanese drums, which you can use in your classroom to teach vocabulary/sentence structures in natural English.

おもしろい授業をしていますか？　3歳児〜6歳児の関心を引く

毎週のクラスが同じように行われますか？子供たちが教室の中を走しったり、笑ったり、教師が企画した授業と全く違う行動をとっていますか？英語教師に悩ましいことですね！このような授業を経験していれば、次の2つのことを頭に入れて欲しいです。

まず、授業が上手くいかないことは子供のせいではありません。そして、子供たちがもともと面白いものに興味を持つので、このワークショップでは困っているあなたに授業を面白くするノーハウを紹介します。

“Are your lessons interesting?” (Engaging the 3 - 6 year old)

It’s become a weekly ritual. Your young learners are racing around the classroom, laughing and merrily doing everything except what you have on your lesson plan. It’s an English teacher’s worst nightmare . . . how many minutes to go?????

If this scenario sounds familiar, please keep two things in mind.  

First of all, if the lesson is not working, it is not the fault of the children. Secondly, children are by nature curious and vitally interested in anything and everything that is even remotely interesting, so . . . back to the title of this presentation.

子ども達に英語を喋らせるカードゲーム

人間の学び方においてキーポイントとなるのはゲームです。私たちが今もっている知識の大部分は様々なゲームによって得られたものです。教室内において、ゲームは子どものやる気を起こさせる重要な役割を持ちます。やる気を起こさせ、自信を持たせ、他の子達との結束を築かせます。それは新しい言語であると共に、すでに知っている言語に使える文脈でもあります。

しかしゲームをする時、一ヶ国語だけ用いたＥＦＬクラスでは問題が起こることもあります。ゲームを始めてしまうと、Ｌ１モードのコミュニケーションまたはコミュニケーション無しの合図となってしまうのです。カードに書かれたボキャブラリーや課題をこなすだけじゃなく、ゲームをきちんと設計しないと子ども達を常に英語でコミュニケーションを取らせるのは難しいのです。

特別な道具が必要なゲーム（ボードやサイコロ等）も実行するのが難しい時もあります。大きなボードは持ち歩きにくく、サイコロは無くす危険性が高く、それらを全部保管する場所も限られています。

今回のワークショップ実演では、参加者は英語を最大限に引き出されるカードゲーム（Crazy Matches、Challenge、No
Way、Please等）を遊び学べます。全てのゲームは子ども達にも親しみなれているルールですが、教師の作ったカードです。遊び方は簡単に覚えられ、どんなレベルにも改造でき、様々な内容に使えます。

それと新しいカードデッキを作るためのコツ、カードに使える複写可能な絵を貰える所、カードにあまり費用をかけないで効率よく作れる方法なども教えます。

Title: Card games to get kids to talk

Abstract: Games play a key role in the learning process of human beings. A lot of what we have learned about the world, we have learned through games. In children's classes, games are an important source of motivation. They motivate children to do well, to feel good about themselves, and to bond with others. They are a source of new language, and they provide a context for use of language already learned.

However, in the monolingual EFL class, playing games can be problematic. A game is often a signal to switch back into L1 mode for communication?or even to use no language at all. Games must be well designed to encourage children to communicate in English?not just name vocabulary items or complete tasks given on cards.

Games that require special boards, dice, or other equipment are also sometimes difficult to implement. Large boards are difficult to carry around from classroom to classroom or school to school; dice, etc. can be difficult to find or use; storage space may be limited. Card games are simple to make and carry around, and take little room to store.

In this workshop demonstration, participants will learn about and have a chance to play some card games developed for maximum use of English, including Crazy Matches, Challenge, No Way, and Please. All are patterned on games already familiar to many children, but use teacher-created decks of cards. They are easy to learn and can be adapted for use at many different levels and in many different content areas.

Tips will also be given on developing new decks of cards, sources for reproducible pictures to be used on the cards, and ways to produce cards effectively and inexpensively.

イマージョン教育に向けての準備
子供の認知発達と言語発達には密接な関係があります。第二外国語取得の際、子供はコミュニケーションへの動機を一番意味のある背景で身につけます。内容中心言語教育は言語発達に認知面での強固な土台をつくります。日本全国で英語イマージョン教育は、子供に、生活に重要で面白い内容を通して、英語教育を行っています。このワークショップでは、イマージョン教育を計画する際に必要なことを挙げ、イマージョン教育で定評のあるアクティビティーを紹介します。イマージョン教育と内容中心言語学習について、参加者も活発に意見を交換していただきたい。

Planning for Immersion Education

Cognitive development and language development in young children go hand-in-hand. When learning a second language, motivation for communication is learned by children in the most meaningful context. Content-based language education can provide a strong cognitive base for language development. English immersion education programs around Japan are teaching English to children through content that is both important and interesting to their lives.

The presenter will discuss what is involved for teachers take when planning for immersion education, as well as introducing some activities that have proven to be favorites in the immersion classroom. Participants are encouraged to generate discussion on immersion education and content-based language learning through the workshop.

Ideas for Elementary School Teachers

In this workshop, the presenter will show you a range of activities for teachers, especially those involved in elementary school to use to teach basic English to children easily. Even Japanese teachers will find that it may not be as difficult as they thought.

英語を外国語として学ぶ子どもたちのクラスでの、歌や、絵本をつかった楽しいアクティビティーのアイディアをご紹介します。子供たちは経験から学びます。子供たちにとってはアクティビティーは楽しいものですが、与える側としては目的を持つ必要があります。子どもの学びのプロセス、教えるという事はどういうことか？などを心に、伝統的なものから五感を刺激するような楽しいアクティビティーを紹介します。

Children learn through experience. In this workshop, the presenters will share fun ideas to expand activities through stories and songs. Activities should be FUN for children, but there must be PURPOSES to do them. With the learning process of children and the concept of teaching in our minds, traditional activities to sensuous activities for all ages will be shared.

こどもの英語検定―ケンブリッジＹＬＥ英語検定の紹介

ケンブリッジの子供英語検定（ＹＬＥ）は世界のたくさんの地域で実施されています。１０年前に導入されて現在世界の６５以上の国々で３１万人以上の子供たちがＹＬＥの試験を受けています。試験は７歳から１３歳までの子供たちを対象していてスターターズ、ムーバーズ、フライヤーズという３つのレベルがあります。このテストの中心は子供たちが最初に発達する会話と聞き取りの能力。子供たちは大人とは全く違う世界の見方があるので学校、家族、食べ物、スポーツそして動物などの子供たちに理解しやすい話題を選んでいる。このプレゼンテーションは先生や親にテストのことについて、テストの発展の背景、３つのレベルを含めて紹介しており、試験を受けるために必要な能力も説明する。

Assessing Young Learners - An Introduction to the Cambridge YLE tests  

The Cambridge Young Learners English Tests (YLE) were first introduced ten years ago after extensive trials in many parts of the world and are now taken by over 310,000 children in over 65 countries and territories worldwide. The tests are available at three levels, Starters, Movers and Flyers, and are designed for children aged 7-13. The emphasis in the Cambridge YLE tests is on speaking and listening skills, the abilities that children develop first, and since children relate to the world quite differently from adults, topic areas have been chosen which are relevant to children’s lives; such as school, family, food, sports and animals.   This presentation provides an introduction for teachers and parents to the YLE tests, including the background to the development of the tests, an introduction to the three levels of the tests, and a review of the skills that are tested.

 Fun Ways to Use a Picture book in the Classroom

Using the example of her picture book, ‘Where Are My Stripes’, author, illustrator and teacher, Patricia Daly Oe, will demonstrate how to plan creative and enjoyable lessons around a picture book for children aged from around 4 to 8 years old. It will be an interactive presentation with games, a quiz and a song as well as a general discussion about the advantages of using picture books to teach English to children. The presentation will be in English only.

 "English Feast" 

When food is both nutritious and looks and tastes good too, then it feeds both our bodies and our souls.  The same goes for language: let’s teach phonics, grammar rules and so on through language which is in itself delightful.  It’s not enough to use activities which are fun for children: the language used in the activiti3esshould also be appealing and irresistible to the students.

Please come along and experience a smorgasbord of language which is aromatic and spicy, juicy and flavoursome, rich and hearty, colourful and inviting.  And please come on an empty stomach!

Going Beyond Verb*all！
It is important for EFL learners to continually increase their active vocabulary and grammar competence. E for ju: creates materials with the following thought in mind: “Why not make learning a fun and pleasurable experience?” In the past, “play” to children meant thinking, creating, and solving problems. This is the spirit we want to bring back into the classroom. My thanks to the many teachers who are using Verb*all. In this workshop I will introduce other materials and activities.
